The Faculty Forum of IIT Bombay has publicly supported Professor Suryanarayana Doolla after he was named in an FIR following a second year student unfortunate death by suicide. The tragic event happened on Friday after the student was reportedly caught using a mobile phone and AI tools during a mid-semester examination. Shortly after the incident, the student returned to his hostel room and took his own life.
Following allegations made by the deceased student family, local police registered an FIR against Professor Doolla under charges of caste abuse and abetment to suicide. The situation triggered strong student protests across the campus.
In a official statement, the Faculty Forum expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the student but firmly defended the professor. The forum stated that Professor Doolla was simply performing his regular invigilation duties according to the official rules set by the institute. They emphasized that reporting academic cheating is standard procedure and expressed distress over efforts to damage the professors professional reputation. The institute administration also clarified that no immediate disciplinary action had been taken against the student, and he was assured that his academic career would not be affected. The police are currently investigating the matter further.
