Today is Tuesday October 20 2026 and people across India are happily celebrating the grand festival of Dussehra also known as Vijayadashami. The festive mood is high as markets light up Ramlila plays reach their grand end and families come together to celebrate the victory of good over evil.
According to the Hindu panchang the sacred Dashami Tithi begins at 12:50 PM today. Priests say that the most special time for puja called the Vijay Muhurat, falls between 1:59 PM and 2:45 PM. During this auspicious afternoon window, families perform special prayers thank their tools and books through Shastra Puja and seek blessings for success and new beginnings.
Dussehra reminds everyone of two legendary victories: Lord Rama victory over the ten headed demon king Ravana, and Goddess Durga triumph over the demon Mahishasura. The main highlight of the day will happen late in the evening. Huge effigies of Ravana Kumbhakarna and Meghnad will be burned in public grounds across North West and Central India to mark the end of darkness and evil. Meanwhile devotees in Eastern states are preparing for traditional rituals as they bid a grand farewell to Goddess Durga. Happy Dussehra to all!
