In a major move, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has written a official letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding a permanent bench of the Supreme Court in Chennai. CM Vijay emphasized that this decision would greatly benefit people living across all southern states of India.

At present, the country highest court operates only from New Delhi. CM Vijay pointed out that traveling all the way to New Delhi involves huge expenses and long travel time. Because of this large geographic distance, common citizens, poor people, and middle class families from the south face severe difficulties in seeking justice. He noted that justice should be equally accessible to every citizen, no matter where they live.

Highlighting the constitutional rights of citizens, CM Vijay stated that setting up a regional bench under Article 130 would bring courts closer to the public without affecting the independence of the judiciary. He added that Chennai has world class infrastructure and a legal community capable of supporting the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister requested PM Modi to take up the matter with the Supreme Court afresh and reconsider the long standing demand of Tamil Nadu and neighboring southern states. People across South India are welcoming this step, hoping for faster and more affordable justice near their homes.
