In a major development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has officially written a letter to the Central Government requesting a possible ban on online gaming platforms. Speaking in the state Legislative Assembly, Fadnavis assured members that the Union Government understands the gravity of the situation and is taking the state's request very seriously.
The Chief Minister made these important remarks after Members of the Legislative Assembly(MLAs) across various political parties voiced deep concern during the Assembly session. The leaders highlighted an alarming rise in online gambling addiction, particularly among young students and teenagers. They warned that these digital gaming applications are causing heavy financial losses for families, creating severe domestic disputes, and leading to a rapid surge in cybercrimes across the state.
The issue has become an important topic of discussion as reports of financial losses, fraud cases, and addiction continue to increase. Many public representatives have asked for stronger rules to protect people, especially youngsters, from the harmful effects of online gambling.
Addressing the House, Fadnavis clearly explained the state's legal position. He clarified that individual state governments do not hold the constitutional authority to enact laws regulating or banning online gaming. Only the Central Government has the full legal power to pass nationwide legislation or enforce strict bans on internet based betting platforms. Therefore, Maharashtra has sought urgent central action to protect citizens.
