HDFC Bank is in the spotlight after two major developments this week that have attracted strong attention from investors. The country largest private sector lender has raised $1.75 billion through an overseas bond issue, marking one of its biggest international debt market fundraises.

The fundraising was completed through the bank GIFT City branch and consists of two parts: $500 million in three year bonds and $1.25 billion in five year bonds. The move is expected to strengthen the bank foreign currency funding base and support its banking operations. HDFC Bank shares gained on August 21 following the announcement, indicating a positive initial response from the market.

Another important development is the Reserve Bank of India approval for Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to increase its stake in HDFC Bank to 9.99%, compared with its current holding of about 4.11%. The approval gives LIC greater flexibility to increase its investment in the bank.

These developments come after HDFC Bank reported a strong first quarter of FY27, with net profit rising nearly 5% year-on-year to around ₹19,059 crore. Together, the latest fundraising, LIC increased investment opportunity and steady earnings indicate continued investor interest in the bank. For now, the latest developments point toward funding expansion and investor confidence rather than a financial crisis.
