With festivals like Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath around the corner, online fraudsters are active again. Cyber expert Pritesh Mishra has issued a strong warning against suspicious festive messages floating on WhatsApp, Telegram, and social media. These messages promise free mobile recharges, cashbacks, lucky draw prizes, or special holiday bonuses to trap innocent people.
Mishra, a Cyber Master Trainer with MeitY and Senior Assistant at Gautam Buddha University, explained that scammers send malicious links or attached files in formats like APK, ZIP, EXE, or VBS. Clicking these links can install hidden malware, such as Remote Access Trojans (RATs), which secretly spy on your phone and steal passwords, banking details, and personal photos.
To stay safe, Mishra advises verifying any doubtful link on free security websites like VirusTotal before clicking. If marked "Malicious" or "Phishing", delete it right away. If you clicked a bad link by mistake, clean your phone immediately using the eScan CERT In Bot Removal App from the Google Play Store. Always enable Two Step Verification on WhatsApp and other banking apps. Watch out for sudden battery drain, overheating, or unknown apps, as these point to malware. If infected, back up essential data and factory reset your phone.
“Vigilance and awareness remain the most effective safeguards against cybercrime. Only informed and responsible digital citizens can contribute to building a secure Digital India", Mishra stressed. Stay alert, avoid unverified free gift offers, and keep your hard earned money safe during this festive season.
