Elon Musk has announced a major name change for the artificial intelligence division of SpaceX. The company AI unit, currently known as SpaceXAI, will be renamed SpaceXSI, using the term Super Intelligence instead of Artificial Intelligence. Musk confirmed the change in a post on X on October 4. The move comes as the term Super Intelligence or SI is getting more attention in the technology industry.
US President Donald Trump has been pushing the use of the term and has also directed US federal agencies to use Super Intelligence in official communication. Musk is not the only major technology leader using the new term. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently suggested that data centres could be called superintelligence factories. The changes come after AI leaders met Trump at the White House and agreed to voluntary safety standards for advanced AI systems. Super intelligence generally refers to an AI system that could perform thinking and problem solving tasks better than humans across many areas.
However, such a system does not currently exist and remains a future concept. Experts and critics say changing the name does not solve the bigger questions around AI safety, control and public trust. The debate is likely to continue as companies develop increasingly powerful AI systems.
