Amazon has updated its guidelines for software engineers, highlighting how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way software is developed. The company wants engineers to learn AI tools and use them to improve work, productivity and customer experience. In a memo shared with engineers, Amazon engineering leader Terk Terkowitz said the world is only seeing the beginning of AI impact on software engineering.

The company believes AI will become a major part of software development in the coming years. Amazon also warned against measuring employee performance only through AI usage, the number of lines of code written or the amount of AI tokens consumed. According to the company, these numbers do not always show whether an engineer is doing valuable work. Instead, engineers and managers should focus on real results, better products and customer needs. Amazon also encouraged employees to understand where AI tools work well and where they fail. The company said that discovering situations where AI does not help is useful learning, not a failure.

The updated guidelines reflect a major shift in the technology industry, where AI is becoming an important tool for developers. However, Amazon still sees human judgement, technical knowledge and problem solving skills as essential. For software engineers, the message is clear, learning AI can help them adapt to changing workplace expectations, but delivering quality results remains the priority.
