YouTube is making a major update to how video views are counted on the platform. Starting August 24, 2026, a view will be counted the second a video begins playing, right from its very first frame. This new system will apply to regular long form videos, live streams, and other formats, bringing them in line with how YouTube Shorts already counts views.

Because views will now count immediately, creators and viewers will likely notice public view counts climbing much faster than before. Under the old system, people had to watch a video for a specific amount of time before the platform added a view to the counter. Now, simply launching the video will register as a view right away.

However, a higher view count does not mean creators will automatically earn more money. The platform will still use deeper engagement metrics like how many minutes people actually spend watching, how long they stay before clicking away, and how many likes or comments they leave to calculate earnings and recommend videos.

For smaller creators, this change offers great social proof, making growing channels look more credible right from the start. On the flip side, brands and advertisers will need to look beyond raw view numbers when deciding which creators to work with, focusing instead on real audience engagement. Playing a video is not the same as actually watching it. While the public view numbers will definitely look bigger under this new system, creators will still need strong video intros and engaging storytelling to turn a quick view into a loyal fan.
