Meta owned WhatsApp has started testing optional date of birth prompts for select users in India. The step comes as the platform prepares for India Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, set to come into force in May 2027.
The company clarified that this test fully protects user privacy and sharing the information remains purely optional. Users do not need to enter their birth date to continue using the app. WhatsApp stated that age details will stay private and will never be shared with other users.
The DPDP Act requires digital platforms to follow strict rules for protecting children personal data. This test allows WhatsApp to prepare its systems before the government rules take full effect.
Separately, WhatsApp addressed concerns regarding account security. The company acknowledged that some accounts were mistakenly placed under review while trying to stop platform abuse. Meta confirmed it is working to fix the issue and restore all affected accounts quickly.
