While billionaire Elon Musk famously launched a Tesla car into space using a massive rocket in 2018, an Indian startup has achieved a unique space milestone of its own using a balloon. Chennai based aerospace company Aerolaunch India successfully sent a miniature car bonnet 21 kilometres above the Earth. This creative launch took place from Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, capturing global attention for its bold approach.
The experiment was carried out in partnership with CarzSpa to mark their 20th anniversary. The main target of the mission was to test the durability of a special car protection layer, called Aegis Paint Protection Film (PPF). Floating near space for about two hours, the car bonnet survived extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures dropping to minus 50 degrees Celsius and intense ultraviolet radiation. After a successful landing 30 kilometres away from the launch site, the team safely recovered the payload and reported zero damage to the film.
This special balloon flight shows how fast Indian private tech companies are growing in scientific testing and creativity. High-altitude balloon missions offer a low cost, smart solution for companies to test their materials and sensors high up in the atmosphere without using heavy rockets.
By successfully proving that everyday vehicle safety coatings can survive harsh near-space environments, the mission highlights strong engineering skill. It inspires young innovators across the country, showing that Indian startups can deliver high tech experiments with simple, effective methods.
