Massive rising waters across the Godavari and Sabari rivers recently triggered a major crisis in the Polavaram district. Fast moving floodwaters forced local disaster management teams to rapidly evacuate nearly 32,000 residents to avoid potential catastrophe.
The severe situation primarily hit the V.R. Puram and Kunavaram mandals the hardest. Rising water levels disrupted major transportation routes and totally submerged large portions of agricultural lands. Emergency crews, including disaster response personnel utilizing country boats and tractors, worked urgently to move vulnerable individuals to safety. Because conditions were rapidly deteriorating, officials safely relocated 46 pregnant women to Community Health Centres to ensure their medical needs were met without interruption.
While the immediate danger has started to ease, the sheer volume of displaced residents highlights the massive scale of this natural disaster. By Sunday, reports indicated the water had begun receding, offering a slight reprieve to the exhausted region. Officials subsequently withdrew the second flood warning at Bhadrachalam.
At the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram, authorities managed the crisis by raising all 175 gates to discharge nearly 13 lakh cusecs of floodwater into the sea. Local leaders now face the huge task of supporting the affected communities and helping them rebuild their homes following this devastating event.
