Apple has a new CEO. John Ternus has officially taken over as the head of the technology giant, succeeding Tim Cook after his 15 year leadership. Ternus, 51, brings around 25 years of experience inside Apple and is known for his strong work in hardware and product development.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 after working at Virtual Research Systems. Before entering the tech industry, he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He also competed in swimming during his university years.
His first major project at Apple was the Apple Cinema Display. Over the years, his career expanded across some of Apple biggest products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods. He also played an important role in Apple move from Intel processors to its own Apple silicon chips.
Ternus became Apple Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, giving him a major role in developing the company devices. Unlike Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, he has generally stayed away from the public spotlight and is known mainly within the technology industry. Tim Cook, who became Apple CEO in 2011, has now moved into the role of executive chairman. He will continue to remain involved with Apple while helping with the leadership transition.
Ternus now takes charge at an important time for Apple, with the company facing strong competition in areas such as AI, smartphones and new technology. His deep hardware experience could shape Apple next phase of products and innovation.
