You are exceptional, you are unconventional, and you are distinctive. Our teachers and parents told us this all the time when we were young. If this is really true, then why does everyone’s dream life look the same? The same dream of getting a six-figure salary, wanting a similar kind of body to the celebrities we see, wanting to go on a world tour, and falling in love like they do in movies, while being unaware of what an actual relationship means.
But from where did we learn these terms? We grew up watching superheroes, and it made us believe that maybe we also have a hidden power inside us. Some people grew up watching sports, and they ended up loving one particular sport so much that they thought, “This is why I was born.” We watched romantic movies, and they taught us how people fall in love, and we fell in love in the same way. am not saying that realising what you want in your life through these things is wrong, or that watching movies is wrong. What I want to question is are we really different , or did we simply become what we have been seeing since our childhood on our phones and televisions?
Now that we have grown up, the internet is doing the same job as television once did. We see someone who is fit and decide that we want a body like theirs. We see someone travelling and posting it online, and suddenly we want to travel too. If a celebrity is wearing a particular dress, we start saving money for that dress so we can look the same so, do we really have our own choices, or are we just blindly following what people are doing on the internet and trying to become the same by following trends? just ask yourself once.... How much of our personality is actually ours, and how much of it has been shaped by the content we consume?
