In a major political update, the Election Commission of India has barred both factions of the Trinamool Congress from using the party name and its official symbol. The decision comes right before the upcoming Assembly bypolls in West Bengal.
The conflict started after a major split inside the party, dividing it into two groups. One group is led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while the rival faction is led by Ritabrata Banerjee. Both sides claimed to be the real Trinamool Congress and asked to use the iconic flowers and grass symbol for their candidates. Because the bypolls are very close and there is not enough time to make a final decision, the Election Commission issued an interim order. The order clearly states that neither side will be allowed to use the party name or the symbol until the main dispute is fully resolved.
To ensure a fair election, the poll panel has instructed both factions to submit three new choices for their group names and free symbols. The Election Commission will temporarily allot new names and symbols from those lists so both groups can participate in the elections. This step aims to give both sides an equal chance while preventing voter confusion.
