A 10-year-old Taiwanese student has made headlines globally after winning a top invention award at the 2026 Silicon Valley International Festival (SVIIF) in California. Hsu Ting-wei, a student at Kang Chiao International School in Taiwan, received the Best Invention Award for creating an AI powered electronic nose.

The young inventor device is designed to sample and analyse air behind x-ray baggage scanners. The technology could help identify substances or unusual materials that may not be easily detected through an x-ray image alone. Hsu invention also won a gold medal, adding to Taiwan strong performance at the international event. The Taiwanese team won 24 gold medals along with several other special awards, showing the growing focus on innovation and technology among young inventors.

The achievement has attracted attention because of Hsu young age and the practical use of artificial intelligence in the invention. Instead of simply creating a school level project, the student developed a technology aimed at solving a real world detection problem.

The success also highlights how students are becoming involved in areas such as AI, electronics and smart technology at an early age. International invention competitions like SVIIF give young innovators a platform to present their ideas before experts and judges from different countries. Hsu achievement has now become one of the standout stories from this year festival, while Taiwan record medal haul has further highlighted its strong performance in global innovation.
