The State Bank of India (SBI) has warned customers about a rising online fraud known as the Jumped Deposit Scam. Under this scam, fraudsters use small, unexpected deposits to gain people trust and then try to steal a much larger amount through UPI payments. The warning was issued as part of the National Cyber Security Special Campaign 6.0. SBI has asked customers to stay alert and avoid acting quickly when they receive unknown money in their bank accounts.

The scam usually begins when a person receives a small amount of money from an unknown source. Soon after, someone may call or message them, claiming that the money was transferred by mistake. The fraudster then asks the person to return it urgently. Instead of a normal refund, the scammer may send a UPI payment request that asks the victim to approve a much larger payment. If the person approves it without checking, money can be taken from their account.

SBI has advised customers not to trust such requests blindly. If an unknown amount appears in your account, do not send money back directly or approve any unexpected UPI payment request. Contact your bank through its official customer care number or visit a branch to check the transaction. Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, passwords or banking details with anyone. Never allow a caller to pressure you into making a payment. If you receive a suspicious call, block and report the number and inform your bank immediately. If you lose money in an online scam, contact the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in. Staying calm and verifying every transaction can help protect your savings from online fraud.
