In a major relief for daily shoppers and small shopkeepers the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially launched a trial run of new ₹10 and ₹20 plastic or polymer banknotes across select cities. This initiative aims to tackle the long standing problem of torn soiled and damaged paper currency in daily transactions.
Unlike traditional cotton paper cash these new polymer notes are made from a smooth high tech plastic material. They are completely waterproof strain resistant and far more durable. Official estimates suggest that these plastic notes will last two to three times longer than paper currency. This means citizens will no longer have to worry about notes getting ruined in rain accidental washing or heavy daily wear and tear. Furthermore advanced security features built into the plastic material will make it virtually impossible for counterfeiters to copy.
If you are worried about your current paper money there is no need to panic. The RBI has clarified that existing paper notes will remain legal tender and will circulate normally alongside the new plastic currency. The central bank plans to observe how these notes withstand India diverse weather and heavy usage patterns before expanding distribution nationwide.
