A tragic building collapse in Delhi Satya Niketan has killed seven people, while the hostel agreement connected to the building has now raised serious questions about student safety and responsibility. The five storey building, which was being used as a boys hostel, collapsed on Sunday. Rescue teams continued their operation on Monday to check for anyone still trapped under the debris.
The Times of India reported that a copy of the paying guest (PG) agreement stated that the hostel would not be responsible for casualties, injuries or damage to students belongings in certain situations. These included fire, heavy rain, earthquakes and sealing of the property. The clause has come under strong scrutiny after the deadly collapse.
The building was reportedly around 50–55 years old and had undergone renovation before students started living there. However, construction work was still continuing, including work in the basement. Preliminary information suggests that water accumulation and ongoing repair work may have played a role in the collapse.
At least 12 people were rescued from the rubble, while several others were injured. Police have arrested the building owner, and five municipal officials have also been suspended following the incident. The tragedy has again highlighted concerns about the safety of private hostels and PG accommodations used by students in Delhi.
