Maharashtra BJP MLA Parag Shah, known for his large declared wealth, recently spent several hours disguised as a beggar on the streets of Ghatkopar, Mumbai. Shah said the unusual exercise was suggested by his Jain spiritual guru, Namramuni Maharaj, during a religious period.
Shah, who represents Ghatkopar East, changed his clothes, used makeup to hide his identity and went out without his usual security, vehicles and expensive belongings. He visited places around Ghatkopar railway station, walked through the area and asked people for food and money. According to Shah, the experience showed him how differently people can be treated when their social position and wealth are not known. He also said that ordinary people were willing to help him despite not knowing who he was.
During the exercise, one person reportedly gave him Rs 20 for food. A samosa seller also gave him food without charging him after Shah said he had no money. He later described these encounters as an important part of his experience. Shah later removed his disguise and returned to some of the same locations. He said the exercise helped him observe people reactions before and after they knew his identity.
According to his 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election affidavit, Shah had declared assets of about Rs 3,383 crore, making him the richest candidate in that election. He is also a businessman and real estate developer. The unusual episode has since attracted attention after videos and accounts of his experience circulated online.
