In a shocking global tech development, Indian origin entrepreneur Varun Mohan has made huge headlines across social media. The co founder and CEO of AI startup Windsurf, earlier known as Codeium, has finalized a massive deal with Google valued at around $2.4 billion or ₹20,633 crore.
Before closing this mega deal with Google, Varun rejected a much larger acquisition offer from AI giant OpenAI. OpenAI wanted to buy his startup completely for $3 billion, which equals about ₹25,794 crore. However, Varun turned down OpenAIs offer to protect his startups independence and keep full control over its technology. Instead, he chose a non exclusive licensing partnership with Google DeepMind. Under this deal, Varun Mohan and key team members will join Google DeepMind to help accelerate Gemini AI, while Windsurf continues operating independently.
Meanwhile, viral social media posts claim Varun succeeded without attending premier Indian institutes like IIT, NIT, or IIM. While technically true, the claim is misleading because Varun actually earned his masters degree from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2017. Born in California, Varun worked at top companies like LinkedIn and Samsung before launching his startup in 2021. His team built Windsurf, an advanced AI coding tool for software developers.
