A massive flash flood in Nepal Rasuwa district has caused widespread destruction, killing more than 150 people and leaving hundreds missing. The disaster struck near the Nepal and China border after a sudden surge in the Bhote Koshi River. The exact cause is still being investigated, with a glacial event, landslide and other factors being considered.
The flood swept away vehicles, bridges, roads, villages and several hydropower projects, badly affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Rescue teams are facing difficult conditions because many roads and bridges have been damaged.
The disaster has also raised concern in India. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travellers were initially reported missing, including 105 Indian tourists and 37 NRIs. Many of the missing travellers were reportedly visiting the region as part of the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
Nepal Army, police and rescue teams have launched large scale operations using helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs. Several injured people have been taken to hospitals in Kathmandu for treatment.
India has also stepped up its response. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and offered support. India has sent relief and medical assistance, while Indian authorities have opened helplines to help families locate missing citizens. The situation remains serious as rescue teams continue searching for missing people and providing emergency assistance in the flood hit areas.
