A social media post intended to defend an actress against online trolling has sparked a debate of its own. Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar apologised after mistakenly referring to Rashmika Mandanna as a Tamil actor while speaking out against criticism of her Hindi accent. The incident gained attention on October 25, 2026, after Akhtar comments on X prompted users to correct his description of the actress regional background.

The discussion began after Rashmika spoke about facing criticism over her Hindi pronunciation during an appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 9 alongside Vijay Deverakonda.Akhtar came to her defence, arguing that people should not mock someone for speaking a language with an accent. He also challenged critics to consider how they themselves might sound while speaking an unfamiliar language. However, while making his point, he described Rashmika as a Tamil actor. Social media users quickly pointed out that she is from Karnataka, has Kodava roots and has worked extensively across Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi cinema.

Akhtar acknowledged the correction, writing, I stand corrected. He subsequently apologised and explained that he did not know Rashmika personally and had watched one of her films in Tamil. While many users appreciated Akhtar message against accent based discrimination, others questioned why he had misidentified the actress while defending her. The incident shifted the conversation from Hindi pronunciation to regional identity and the importance of understanding India linguistic diversity.

Rashmika has previously spoken about wanting to work across film industries and learn multiple languages rather than limiting herself to one industry. Her comments have also highlighted the challenges actors face when performing in languages beyond their mother tongue. The controversy raises a broader question about how audiences judge actors who speak languages with regional accents.
