In a major move to stop online fraud and fake news, the Indian Government has officially enforced strict regulations for AI generated deepfakes and synthetic media. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has made it mandatory for all social media platforms and digital content creators to clearly label any content created using artificial intelligence.
This national campaign began when MeitY issued its first major deepfake advisory in November 2023. Following this, the government continuously updated the IT Rules through 2024, 2025, and early 2026 to ensure full user safety online. Under these enforced rules, platforms like Meta, YouTube, and X must automatically detect and watermark AI videos, synthetic voice recordings, and face swapped photos.
For content creators, hiding AI usage is no longer an option. Anyone uploading realistic AI videos or cloned voice clips must select the AI generated disclosure tag before publishing. Furthermore, social media platforms are legally required to remove non consensual deepfakes, fake celebrity endorsements, and financial scam videos within 24 to 36 hours of receiving a complaint.
These rules bring huge relief to millions of Indian social media users and WhatsApp groups. By making digital content fully transparent, the government aims to protect innocent citizens from falling victim to identity theft, fake viral videos, and online banking scams.
