A major tragedy struck south Delhi on Sunday afternoon when a five storey paying guest hostel collapsed in the busy Satya Niketan area. The sudden collapse left three people dead and two others in extremely critical condition. The building was filled with college students when the whole structure came crashing down around afternoon, creating panic across the nearby South Campus area.
Emergency teams including the fire brigade, disaster response forces, and local police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the emergency call. Rescue workers pulled multiple trapped individuals out from under heavy concrete slabs and debris. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care, where doctors are closely monitoring those in critical condition.
Local residents mentioned that construction or repair work was taking place in the basement, which might have weakened the foundation of the old building. The narrow lanes of Satya Niketan made it difficult for heavy machinery to reach the exact spot quickly, forcing rescue teams and local volunteers to clear debris manually to save lives.
Authorities have cordoned off the entire area and ordered a detailed safety inspection of adjacent buildings in the neighborhood. Police officials have registered a case against the building owner to investigate negligence and safety violations. Rescue operations are still going on to ensure no one remains buried under the rubble.
