Google Maps has started showing near real time petrol and diesel prices at fuel stations across the United Kingdom (UK). The new feature comes through a partnership between Google and the UK government, aiming to help drivers compare fuel prices and find cheaper options nearby. With fuel costs putting pressure on household budgets, the update could make everyday travel more affordable by helping people choose where to refuel.

To use the feature, drivers can open Google Maps and search for a nearby petrol station, also known as a forecourt in the UK. The app can then display the available petrol and diesel prices, allowing users to compare nearby stations before making a stop. Instead of visiting different fuel stations to check rates, drivers can use the information on their phones to make a more informed choice.

The feature is powered by the UK government Fuel Finder scheme. Under the scheme, fuel stations must report changes in their petrol and diesel prices within 30 minutes. The government says the system now covers around 99 percent of the fuel sold on UK roads. The data is already used by services such as Waze, RAC Fuel Watch and other fuel price platforms. Bringing it to Google Maps could make the information available to more drivers.

The UK government hopes the feature will increase competition between fuel stations and help people save money. According to the government, households with a car could save an average of £40 a year by comparing prices. However, actual savings will depend on local prices and driving habits. The feature is currently aimed at UK drivers and does not mean that live fuel prices are available on Google Maps in India.
