A fresh flood threat has emerged in Nepal Darchula district after a massive landslide partially blocked the Chaulani River. The incident has put communities living downstream on alert, with officials warning that the situation could become dangerous if more debris falls into the river.
The landslide occurred at Bhattar in Api Himal Rural Municipality. Large amounts of debris entered the river and affected its normal flow. Authorities fear that continued landslides could completely block the river. If the blockage suddenly breaks, a large amount of water could rush downstream and cause flash flooding.
People living near the river have been asked to stay alert and take necessary safety measures. Security personnel have also been deployed in the area to warn residents and remain ready for emergency action. Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta has directed local authorities and security agencies to maintain high alert.
The Armed Police Force said the river was flowing at a normal level for now. However, personnel from the Nepal Chameliya Hydropower Security Base in Balanch are monitoring the river and nearby areas closely. The Chaulani River, also known as the Chamelia, originates in the Api Himal region and later joins the Mahakali River, which forms part of the Nepal India border. The latest warning comes while Nepal is already dealing with the impact of recent floods and flash floods.
