Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan and South sensation Prithviraj Sukumaran’s new crime thriller film Daayra has faced a very slow start at the Indian box office on its first day. Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the movie was expected to pull a good crowd to the theatres. However, early reports state that Daayra collected only around ₹90 lakh net across India on Friday, making it one of the lowest opening day earnings for Kareena Kapoor in recent times.
The main reason for this quiet opening is the strong storm of Hanuman Ansh at the ticket counter. The mythological action film continues to run with packed halls across the country, leaving very few moviegoers for new releases. In addition, Daayra recorded a low average theater occupancy of just 12% on its first day.
The film deals with a serious social theme about law, morality, and justice. While film critics have praised the strong acting performances of both Kareena and Prithviraj, the intense subject has not immediately attracted regular family audiences. Trade experts believe that Daayra now depends heavily on positive word of mouth over Saturday and Sunday. Unless the weekend shows a big jump in ticket sales, this star-studded drama will struggle to recover its costs at the box office.
