Cancer treatment is expensive for many Indian families. The government has announced a major step to reduce the cost of selected cancer medicines. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority has capped trade margins on 137 identified non scheduled anti cancer medicines at 30 percent. The revised prices will take effect from November 9, 2026. The move is expected to reduce prices by up to 70 percent, depending on the medicine.

The decision follows concerns about high markups on cancer drugs. Government analysis found that trade markups on some medicines were extremely high. The new rules cover selected medicines, including certain patented drugs. The government expects the measure to save consumers around Rs 2,500 crore annually. However, the actual price reduction will vary, and not every cancer medicine will become cheaper under this order.

How Patients Can Check Prices ?

Patients and families should check the revised price after November 9 before buying covered medicines. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority website and Pharma Sahi Daam application can help consumers verify medicine prices. Keep the prescription and bill, and compare the medicine name, strength and quantity before paying.

Manufacturers must submit revised prices within seven days of the notification. Retailers and hospitals must charge the applicable revised prices from November 9 and display updated price lists. State drug authorities will monitor compliance. Patients should continue following medical advice and must not stop or change prescribed treatment without consulting their doctor. The new measure aims to make selected cancer medicines more affordable while maintaining their availability.
