The majestic Jagannath Rath Yatra festival in Puri, Odisha, started on June 27, 2025, drawing millions of devotees to witness the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath and his siblings to the Gundicha Temple. This nine-day celebration, a highlight of Eastern religious tradition, kicked off with the sacred Pahandi ritual, marking the deitiesā departure from the Jagannath Temple.
Why This Year Festival Feels Special, Jagannath Rath Yatra
This year Rath Yatra stands out for its deep cultural resonance and vibrant energy. The towering wooden chariots Nandighosha, Taladhwaja, and Darpadalan, each nearly 45 feet tall were pulled by sea-like crowds. Devotees believe their devotion erases sins and brings blessings. Rituals such as Snana Purnima, Gundicha Marjana, and Hera Panchami have unfolded with full devotion, reinforcing ancient tradition.
The festivalās symbolism shines through its inclusivity: the deities, once confined within temple walls, manifest themselves among devotees. This journey symbolizes the divine reaching out to all, regardless of background. The chariots traversed about three kilometres from the main temple to the Gundicha Temple, amid chants, drums, and collective euphoria. Thousands of volunteers, including members of pilgrim groups and local communities, joined in pulling the ropes. Meanwhile, security operations were stepped up; elite forces and drones monitored the festival for safety and orderliness.
Preparations started weeks aheadāon Akshaya Tritiya and Snana Purnimaālaying the ceremonial groundwork. The sequence of rituals connects devotees spiritually, ending on Niladri Bijay when the deities return to their temple after nine days.
