Tesla will debut in India with the Model Y SUV, set to go on display at its first Mumbai showroom on July 15. The company has already imported a batch of rear-wheel-drive (RWD) units, signaling the global bestseller as its inaugural offering in the country.

Performance & Range

Tesla will offer two variants of the Model Y in India:

  • RWD variant with a 60–62 kWh LFP battery offers around 455 km (WLTP) or approximately 593 km (CLTC) on a single charge. It accelerates from 0‑100 km/h in about 5.9 seconds.
  • Long‑Range AWD comes with a larger 78–79 kWh Li‑NMC pack, delivering over 500 km real-world range (around 622 km WLTP or 719 km CLTC). It achieves 0‑100 km/h in around 4.3–4.6 seconds.

Design & Dimensions

The Model Y measures approximately 4,797 mm long, 1,982 mm wide, and 1,624 mm tall, with 167 mm ground clearance. Its aerodynamic styling includes Tesla’s latest full-width LED light bars and refined wheel designs aimed at reducing drag and enhancing efficiency.

Cabin & Technology

Inside, a minimalist interior centers around a 15.4‑inch touchscreen, complemented by an 8‑inch rear passenger touch display. Standard features include heated and ventilated front seats, powered reclining rear seats. Premium sound, ambient lighting, and generous cargo and frunk space. Optional seven-seat layouts add family flexibility.

Tesla includes advanced safety and convenience technologies such as Autopilot, emergency braking, blind‑spot assist, lane-keep assist, and camera-based driver aids. Enhanced cabin insulation and acoustic glass deliver a notably quiet ride.

Pricing & Market Positioning

Although India’s initial bid was $32,000, the final price is expected to exceed ₹55–65 lakh (ex-showroom). This places the Model Y at the premium end of the EV spectrum, targeting affluent urban buyers.

Tesla enters India with a vehicle that blends performance, luxury, and innovation. The Model Y’s expected success will hinge on its appeal to early adopters. Emerging EV interest in cities, and future developments around pricing, local assembly, and infrastructure deployment.
