Starlink Satellite Internet Enters India, Govt Says No Threat to Telecom Players

Starlink, Elon Musk satellite internet project under SpaceX, is gearing up for its India launch. While the entry of this high-speed satellite service has raised eyebrows in the telecom industry, the Centre is not concerned. According to Union Minister Devusinh Chauhan, Starlink will not pose any major threat to existing telecom operators in India.

What Is Starlink Satellite Offering?

Starlink Satellite uses a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites to deliver internet access, especially in remote and rural regions where fiber or 5G has not yet reached. The Department of Telecommunications recently granted approval for Starlink to start offering services in India. It is expected to target high-paying consumers in under-connected areas, including hilly terrain and border zones.

Pricing is yet to be formally disclosed for India, but global estimates suggest Starlink Satellite services can cost around ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 per month, which puts it well above average broadband or mobile data plans.

Why Government Is Not Worried

The telecom ministry believes Starlink pricing makes it a niche service. Minister Chauhan clarified that Starlink will complement not replace traditional telcos like Jio, Airtel, or BSNL. Its use case is specific: providing connectivity in terrains where cable-laying is unviable or economically unfeasible.

Officials also pointed out that India has already rolled out 5G in over 12,000 villages and continues to invest in fiber infrastructure. So even as Starlink fills certain gaps, it will not disrupt mainstream urban telecom markets.

What It Means for Rural Internet Access?

Starlink presence could speed up internet penetration in regions that still lack reliable coverage. Places like Ladakh, Northeast India, and remote tribal belts could benefit significantly. For government initiatives like Digital India, this could be a valuable assist. Still, high costs may limit mass adoption unless subsidized. The government has not yet confirmed whether Starlink will be eligible for inclusion in its universal service programs.

In the bigger picture, Starlink Satellite is expected to enhance India’s digital infrastructure not replace the existing one.
