Starlink Gets India’s Green Signal for Satellite Internet Operations

In a major push to boost India’s satellite-based connectivity. The Centre has officially granted Elon Musk-led Starlink the required license to offer internet services across the country. The Department of Telecommunications has approved the global Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Internet provider under the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license.

This move clears the path for Starlink to join other players like Jio Satellite and OneWeb in India’s growing space-tech sector. Starlink satellite internet had earlier faced regulatory hurdles in 2021 for pre-selling internet services without approval. The clearance comes after nearly two years of delays and back-and-forth between Starlink and Indian authorities.

Spectrum Allocation Guidelines Near Completion

According to Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the government has almost finalised the spectrum allocation norms for satellite communication. These norms will decide how bandwidth will be distributed among companies and are key to ensuring fair access in a highly competitive market.

The Department is expected to release the final framework within the next few months. This will help Starlink and others roll out services faster. Especially in rural and remote areas where traditional telecom infrastructure is either weak or missing altogether.

India Internet Future After Starlink Satellite Internet

With starlink satellite internet entering the scene, India’s digital connectivity goals are likely to accelerate, particularly in underserved locations. The technology can provide high-speed internet to places where laying cables or building towers is not feasible.

Industry experts believe this will not only bridge India’s digital divide but also enhance connectivity for sectors like defence, agriculture, disaster relief and remote education. It also strengthens India’s space-tech ecosystem. Which has recently gained global attention after the success of missions like Chandrayaan and Gaganyaan.

Now with regulatory approvals out of the way and a clear policy roadmap on the horizon, the race among satellite internet providers in India is set to intensify.
