Rajinikanth, one of Indian cinema most iconic stars, returns to the big screen with Coolie. A mass action drama hitting theatres on 14 August. Known for his larger-than-life persona, unique dialogue delivery and style, Rajinikanth has ruled Tamil cinema for over four decades. From Baashha to Enthiran, his films often break records and create hysteria across states.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Rajinikanth New Movie Coolie is set in a gritty port backdrop where the story unfolds around gold smuggling, labour oppression and an underdog rise. Rajinikanth plays a coolie who takes on a powerful criminal empire that runs an illegal trade network. The teaser showed him with a vintage belt bag and heavy chains, standing in front of crates marked with smuggled gold. This return to a retro setup excited fans who have long waited to see Rajinikanth in a raw, rugged role.
The film cast includes Sathyaraj in a powerful role, Shruti Haasan playing a strong female character and reports suggest a surprise cameo by another major star. Though official confirmation is pending, this move could make Coolie one of the most talked-about films of the year.
Coolie is being produced on a massive budget of around ₹250 crore under the Sun Pictures banner. The production value, teaser cuts and early promotional visuals suggest high-end action, elaborate sets and stylised cinematography.
With music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, and a nationwide release planned in multiple languages, Coolie is positioned as a pan-India blockbuster. Trade analysts already predict record-breaking openings, especially given its release just ahead of Independence Day.
This film is not just another Rajinikanth entertainer. It blends political undertones, raw action and old-school style, aiming to strike nostalgia while appealing to new-age audiences.
