OpenAI has announced that its subscription-plan ChatGPT Go will be available free of charge to users in India for one year starting November 4. The move comes as OpenAI targets India which it now identifies as its second‐largest and fastest‐growing global market. The Go plan had launched recently in India, priced at around Rs 399 per month, and sat between the free tier and the more expensive Plus plan. Making it free removes that barrier and gives Indian users access to higher message limits, more daily image generation and uploads, and longer memory for context in conversations.
By offering ChatGPT Go free for a year, OpenAI signals that it plans to prioritize India in its AI rollout strategy. User demand in India for advanced AI services has already caused its paid subscriptions to more than double. At the same time, competitors like Google LLC and Perplexity AI have been reducing or waiving fees in India to boost user acquisition, and OpenAI likely wants to stay ahead in that race.
Indian users get access to enhanced capabilities of ChatGPT without paying, at least for the next year. Businesses, developers and power users stand to gain because more people will experiment with the higher tier features. The subscription will presumably revert to its paid model unless OpenAI extends the free access or changes the terms. Also, free access may still come with some usage limits or conditions different from professional enterprise licences. In short, OpenAI decision opens doors for many more Indians to engage with advanced AI tools and signals how important the Indian market has become in the global AI ecosystem.
