Parliament has approved the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill 2025, which bans online real money games and blocks financial transactions linked to them. Once the President gives assent, fantasy sports, poker, rummy, and betting apps will be forced to shut down. The impact on the industry is significant. Leading platforms such as Dream11 and Mobile Premier League, valued in billions, face the risk of closure. Investors are already jittery, while employees in gaming startups fear job losses.
The government argues that money-based gaming has turned into a social and financial hazard. Around 450 million Indians have participated in such platforms, with estimated annual losses crossing ₹20,000 crore. Officials claim these apps push vulnerable players into debt and addiction, making regulation unavoidable.

Industry voices warn that users could migrate to offshore platforms, raising concerns over unregulated play outside India’s jurisdiction.
