Apple plans to license a custom version of Google Gemini AI model in a high‐stakes deal worth about $1 billion annually. The model, which boasts around 1.2 trillion parameters, will underpin a major overhaul of Siri as part of Apple broader Apple Intelligence strategy. Rather than simply upgrade Siri interface. Apple intends to equip it with deeper contextual understanding, improved summarisation and multi-step task execution. The agreement reportedly mandates that Gemini runs on Apple Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Ensuring user data remains within Apple ecosystem and Google does not receive direct access to personal information.

This collaboration marks a significant departure from Apple previous approach. Historically the company has developed most core technologies internally rather than relying on external AI systems. In this case Apple evaluated models from OpenAI and Anthropic before choosing Google technology. The new Siri is expected to arrive around spring 2026. Possibly under internal code name Linwood, along with iOS 26.4 and fresh hardware. Apple has positioned this as part of a multi-year roadmap that includes iOS 27 and macOS 27 previewed at WWDC.

For users the change could mean more human-like interactions with Siri. Fewer misunderstood queries, better device control through voice and smarter integration across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Home devices. Apple wants to position Siri as a true conversational assistant rather than simply a voice command interface. Analysts view the move as necessary: Siri has long lagged behind rivals in handling complex or multi-step requests. From a business perspective Apple gains speed by leaning on Google advanced AI while it develops its own in-house models with a target of 1 trillion parameters. The Gemini deal acts as a bridge rather than a permanent solution.

However, the strategy carries risks. Dependence on a major competitor for core AI infrastructure raises questions about differentiation. Some observers caution that the success of the new Siri will hinge on how well Apple integrates Gemini without diluting its brand promise of privacy and seamless experience.
