Jim Tang walked away from a US$300,000 Google job. At 27, based in New York, software engineering looked like a golden ticket. He had started there in late 2021 and earned up to US$326,000 in total compensation. That level of income allowed him to chase early retirement and make his parents proud. Yet he felt he was missing something important in life. A breakup triggered a tipping point. He took a leave early in 2025, then resigned in May. That step forced a reckoning. He realised he did not enjoy corporate life. He also recognised success as defined by perks and status felt hollow.

Jim Tang relocated to Tokyo and shifted focus toward freedom and fulfillment. He embraced becoming a digital nomad, creating content, coaching, building digital products and sharing the journey online. With financial runway from Google savings, he could take a risk on a life he chose. His approach to building a personal brand took off. On LinkedIn he made more than 90 videos and over 500 posts in 70 days, growing his audience to over 100,000. All that using only an iPhone and CapCut. He scrapped the notion that you need fancy gear to create impact.

Jim Tang often writes about what matters most in a career. He recommends embracing nonlinear growth, experimenting freely across platforms, being consistent, and not letting equipment hold you back. He believes real success is waking up excited to work not drained by expectations. Now he no longer chases early retirement plans. He prioritises daily fulfilment over distant rewards. He wakes up with energy. Family now supports the path he chose. At its heart this is about owning your life instead of conforming to expectations.
